FYI: Freshman Year Initiative

Resources to accompany library FYI sessions, offered to new freshmen prior to the start of each fall semester.

Your FYI Library Session: Step-by-Step

Step 1. Let's Talk about your college expectations...through Mindmapping!

Use the prompts below to help you illuminate about college expectations:

  • What do you feel prepared for? What do you think you may not be prepared for?
  • What are your personal goals for college?  What is most at stake for you?
  • What do you hope to be involved in at CMU?

Step 2. After considering college expectations with the class, is there a particular concern that resonates for you?

Use the prompts below to explore a concern YOU have about college expectations:

  • Choose a college expectation that concerns YOU.
  • Create a mindmap with that concern in the middle, and make branches considering:
    • Why is it a concern for you?
    • How might this concern affect your personal goals for college?
    • What is most at stake for you?
