For topics as specific as overlooked individuals from history, it's often easier to use the Tomlinson Library's One Search than to try different databases.
If you get too many results that aren't relevant, try putting the person's name into quotation marks. For example: "Gladys Bentley" or "Granville T. Woods" or "Ira Hayes". You might still end up with some strange results so make sure they're about the right person by checking dates and skimming the content.
These specific databases are often the best for historical research that is scholarly and peer-reviewed.
