Coming Up with Keywords

It can be difficult knowing which search terms to use when researching in a database. These resources will help you find productive search terms:

Oxford Dictionary of Gender Studies (2017) - A to Z of sexual health and gender terms

Planned Parenthood Glossary of Sexual Health Terms -  an A to Z of current, clear, medically accurate sexual health terms and information.

Homosaurus  - a list of contemporary vocabulary and definitions of LGBTQ+ terms. Note: these terms are great for use in your paper or annotated bibliography, but some terms may not always be the most fruitful when searching in the library databases because older books and articles may use more antiquated terms (see below).

LGBTQ+ Library of Congress subject terms - this is a list of terms that is often used to describe books, literature and magazines. It's helpful to use keywords from this list because you may find articles you wouldn't otherwise find, as terms often change over time. Note: while these terms may help you to find articles while researching, some of them are outdated or not appropriate to use when writing your paper. We recommend looking at current LGBTQ+ terminology from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) or vocabulary from Homosaurus and using updated, current terms in your own writing.
