III. Advanced Research Strategies

Searching for Images in JSTOR

Searching for specific images in databases can take strategy. When looking for art or primary source documents, a great place to start is JSTOR. From here, you can search for the title of a work or its creator. You can use the "all content" tab to search for articles and primary source documents and the "images" tab to find pieces of art and original documents related to your topic. You can search by creator, title, style, location, material, or keyword. Select "advanced search" to have more control over your search parameters.

Once you find an image, the screen will populate with details about the item (including creation date, medium, and where it's displayed/which institution has provided access to the image), and related articles and images will appear beneath the image.

Using Google Image Serach

Another great tool for image research is Google Image Search. One of the features that makes Google Image Search particularly useful is Reverse Image Search: meaning you can drag and drop images into the search field, and it will generate search results that share that image, including reference, news, and commercial websites. This is helpful if you have an image or a piece of art, but you don't know the name or artist, or you'd like to learn more about the image.
