SOCI 101: Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies

Helpful Search Terms

Because terms often change over time, it can be hard to know which  search terms to use when doing research about LGBTQ+ topics. The Library of Congress uses standardized subject headings to classify terms that can be used in research; while some terms are outdated, they may still help you find useful results as you research. Here are some subject headings, as determined by the Library of Congress, that can help you find what you're looking for: (Big thanks for Mesa County Libraries for letting us use this list!)

  • "Asexuality, sexual orientation"
  • Bisexual(s)
  • Bisexuality
  • "Coming out, sexual orientation"
  • "Drag shows"
  • Gay(s)
  • "Gay and lesbian studies"
  • "Gay rights"
  • "Gender expression"
  • "Gender nonconformity"
  • "Gender reassignment surgery"
  • Homosexuality
  • Intersex
  • "Intersex people"
  • Lesbian(s)
  • "Non-monogamous relationships"
  • "Queer cinema"
  • "Queer theory"
  • "Same sex marriage"
  • Sexology
  • "Sex role"
  • "Sexual behavior"
  • "Sexual minorities"
  • "Sexual minority community"
  • "Sexual orientation"
  • Transgender

Note: while these terms may help you to find articles while researching, some of them are outdated or not appropriate to use when writing your paper. We recommend looking at current LGBTQ+ terminology from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) or vocabulary from Homosaurus and using updated, current terms in your own writing.
