ENGL 425 - Scientific Writing

Outline of a Research Article

One of the assignment for this class is to follow the outline of a scientific paper. A typical outline for a research article includes these sections:

  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Materials and Methods
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusion/Implications
  • References

Articles published in peer-reviewed journals undergo a rigorous evaluation (or review) by experts in the field (the author's peers) and meet a high academic standard.  

Tips on Getting Started

Science writing can take many forms: literature reviews, popular science articles, peer-reviewed articles in journals. Keep in mind that the purpose of your writing added to the specific audience you're writing for will guide your content or the format of your writing. 

Some tips to keep in mind

Be precise Use third or first person pronouns Use active voice Use short sentences Limit quantifiers and subordinate clauses
  Avoid jargon and acronyms Use transitions Check grammar  Be consistent when describing the same thing
